FAQ

Why do you have some many different cleaners and polishing cloths?

Have you noticed how many different hand soaps are on the market? Each cleaner that we offer has been tested by us, friends, staff and of course our customers! Each product does what the manufacture states but each of us have different dirt, different likes or dislikes, and each cleaner performs differently. There is not one "perfect" product. We have found that some of our staff uses a combination of products - SparkleSparkle for travel and quick cleaning, JewelBrite for the deep cleaning under diamonds, Tarni-strips in the jewelry box and Sunshine cloths for a quick polish.

How often should I clean my jewelry?

While there is not a "rule" of how often jewelry should be cleaned, we suggested for your every day jewelry (that's the ones you wear all the time like wedding rings) you should clean them weekly. For items that you wear once and then put away - those should be cleaned after they have been worn or just before storage. Remember that jewelry can be scratched in your jewelry box and should be stored away from other pieces either in a box, pouch or cloth. Men's wedding rings and other jewelry such as gold chains might need to be cleaned more often than once a week.

Why can't I use just soap and water?

Many soaps will and can leave a residue on the jewelry making the metal and stones look dull.

I was told that I could use Windex or Ammonia to clean my jewelry?

Windex is formulated to clean windows, counter tops, etc. not jewelry and can damage delicate stones and finishes. Ammonia is toxic, and again can damage delicate stones and finishes, dulling the metal. Plus the fumes of ammonia can be dangerous (see the government's web site for dangers in jewelry cleaner).

It depends on how tarnish the gold plated silverware is. If it is lightly tarnished Jewel Brite liquid would be our first choice is a natural, safe product, just soak the pieces, rinse with warm water and dry (and don't forget to "reclaim" the Jewel Brite used by pour throuogh a coffee filler to remove the residue and it can be used the next time).

What could I use to clean gold plated silverware?

If any tarnish remains or if the items are more tarnished we suggest the Sunshine Cloth. It is quick, easy and you will be done in a flash. Just wipe the pieces with the cloth, rubbing lightly at the more tarnished areas, rinse and you're finished.

Can I use vinager to clean jewelry?

Vinager is an acid and can harm the metals/alloys in jewelry as well as the gemstones. We do not recommend using any acid chemical to clean jewelry.

Is there a special jewelry cleaner that will clean and polish both gold and silver?

Either the Jewel Brite cleaners or the Diamonds and Pearls cleaners are great for any metals and/or gem stones. So if the jewelry doesn't contain soft stones such as pearls, turquoise or opals a neat "trick" is to use Jewel Brite tarnish remover (even on gold jewelry). Dip a soft toothbrush into water then across the tarnish remover cream, Brush the jewelry item gently but with enough pressure to get below the stones, if the item has stones, apply more cleaner and water and clean just a few passes. Rinse with water, pat dry. The water on the brush dilutes the tarnish remover into more of a polish.
